Колтрейн (Колтрэйн) ДЖОН (Coltrane John) (23 сентября 1926, Гамлет, шт. Северная Каролин — 17 июля 1967, Нью-Йорк), американский джазовый саксофонист (альт, тенор, сопрано) и флейтист, признанный одним из лидеров и самых ярких солистов-импровизаторов в модерн-джазе, композитор.
Начальное музыкальное образование получил в семье и в средней школе в Филадельфии, в 12 лет освоил альт-горн, кларнет и флейту, через год по совету руководителя школьного оркестра перешел на альт-саксофон. Учился затем в Ornstein School of Music и в Granoff Studios как инструменталист и по классу композиции. В 1945-1947 на военной службе (в течение 2 лет играл в военном оркестре на Гавайях).
В 1949 получил приглашение от Диззи Гиллеспи (работал с ним в 1949-51). Всеобщего признания как солист добился в составе квинтета Майлза Дэвиса (1955-1957, 1958-1960) и в квартете Телониуса Монка (июль-декабрь 1957). В этот период стал культивировать созданную им особую импровизационную манеру игры «sheets of sounds style» (буквально — «стиль звуковых пластов»), основанную на виртуозных «сверхскоростных» волнообразных пассажах, образующих элементы особого рода мелодической линии. Данную технику Колтрейн применил и в совместных с Дэвисом и Биллом Эвансом опытах по созданию так называемого модального джаза, открывших собой в 1959 (наряду с Орнетта Коулмена и Сесила Тейлора) фри-джазовую эру.
В 1960 организовал квартет (с участием пианиста Мак-Коя Тайнера, басиста Джимми Гаррисона и барабанщика Элвина Джонса), с которым выступал в клубе «Red Rooster». Позднее в этом ансамбле играла также пианистка Элис Мак-Леод, жена Колтрейна, талантливый импровизатор, смелый и яркий новатор в области фри-джаза. В лучших концертах и записях Колтрейна участвовали также пианист Томми Фланеган и перкуссионист Арт Тейлор. В 1962 Колтрейн работал на записях с Дюком Эллингтоном, позднее — с Доном Черри (1967), Джином Аммонсом (1968). На протяжении 1960-х гг. неизменно занимал в анкетах джазовых журналов («Down Beat» в США, «Swing Journal» в Японии и др.) первое место среди саксофонистов. Умер в возрасте 41 года от болезни печени. C этого момента до настоящего времени его влияние на молодых музыкантов современного джаза не ослабевало. Развитие характерного колтрейновского стиля игры и саксофонового саунда продолжили его ученики и многочисленные последователи, в том числе Арчи Шепп, Чарлз Ллойд, Ян Гарбарек, в России — Н. Панов, А. Пищиков, И. Бутман, С. Гурбелошвили и многие другие. Значительным является и композиторское наследие Колтрейна; среди его лучших сочинений — Naima, Blues Mlnor, Fifth House, Chasin" The Train, Blues To Bechet, Blues To You, Mr. Day, Mr. Syms, Mr. Knight, Harmonique, Dahomey Dance, India, Moment"s Notice, Giant Steps.
Джон Колтрейн — один из наиболее самобытных и авторитетных музыкантов современного джаза, пришедших на смену первому поколению мастеров бибопа и продолживших начатое ими дело в середине 1950-х гг. На раннем этапе своего становления Колтрейн проявил себя как преемник Чарлза Паркера, затем — К. Хокинса, Лестера Янга и Сонни Роллинса. Он был достаточно восприимчив и к идеям молодых музыкантов, учился у них даже тогда, когда стал для многих джазменов кумиром и недосягаемым образцом мастерства. Будучи прирожденным новатором, он тем не менее в самых радикальных экспериментах не утратил связей с родоначальными традициями и фольклорными истоками афроамериканской музыкальной культуры. Органичным компонентом его ярко индивидуального стиля всегда оставалась блюзовая интонация. Очень важным фактором для формирования его мышления является также связь с традициями духовной негритянской музыки, спиричуэлом и госпелом. Колтрейн, по существу, создал особый тип экспрессивной сольной импровизации в духе экстатической речитации негритянского проповедника и мелодики госпел-сонгов, с элементами архаического холлера (плантационные песни-переклички колониальных времен) и шаут-блюза («криковой» тип блюзового пения). Одна из новых стилевых форм музыкального высказывания, развитая им на основе госпела т. н. медитативный стиль, родственный свободной речевой мелодекламации и древней псалмодии (A Love Supreme — 1964, Meditations — 1965, Reverend King — 1966, Expression — 1967). Другой тип мелодии, характерной для Колтрейна, — романтическая балладно-песенная кантилена, в высшей степени эмоциональная, страстно-чувственная, вокальная по природе. Напряженный, темброво-насыщенный «поющий» звук, сохраняющий свою «вокальность» независимо от темпа и технической виртуозности исполнения, — неотъемлемая принадлежность колтрэйновского саксофонового стиля, непосредственно выражающая его внутренний мир. Еще одна привлекательная для него сфера новаторских исканий — интеграция в современный джаз традиций далеких экзотических культур (арабской, африканской, индийской), неевропейских ладовых и звукорядных систем, мелодических и ритмических моделей, инструментальных тембров (Africa Brass, Kulu Se Mama, lmpressions и др.).
Диапазон творческих исканий и новаций Колтрейна охватывает практически все важнейшие стили модерн-джаза (боп, кул, хард-боп) и джазового авангардизма 1960-х гг. В каждом из них он сумел сказать нечто новое, определить и наметить пути дальнейшего развития, утвердить высокие эталоны мастерства.
